Reiki and Chronic Pain

July 28, 2015 by Linda Crane Leave a Comment

Reiki and Chronic Pain: Can Reiki Help the Chronic Pain Epidemic?

Reiki and Chronic Pain: Can Reiki Help Heal the Chronic Pain Epidemic?
Reiki and the Chronic Pain Epidemic

Chronic pain affects more than 100 million Americans, according to a report released by the Institute of Medicine. Another 10 million people suffer from pain on a near-daily basis in Britain, according to The British Pain Society. Those numbers are just for two countries. Imagine what the worldwide numbers are. There is no doubt, then, that chronic pain is a global epidemic that affects millions of lives.

Chronic Pain: Definition and Costs

Defined as pain that lasts longer than three to six months, chronic pain has become one of the most common reasons for seeking medical attention. In the same report, the Institute of Medicine found that, as of February 2014, chronic pain cost the healthcare system an estimated $635 billion each year. Most people who suffer from chronic pain are prescribed pain medications. Increasingly, however, alternative solutions like Reiki have also proven helpful. There is still a lot of confusion and lack of education regarding chronic pain, so understanding it is the first step in deciding on choosing the best treatment.

Pain Relief with Reiki

Understanding Chronic Pain and Its Effects on the Body

Some individuals think of chronic pain as acute pain that does not subside. This definition, however, does not quite capture its wide range of manifestations. Chronic pain is a blanket term, but not everyone who suffers from it will have comparable symptoms. According to WebMD, chronic pain may be mild or excruciating. It can also occur continuously or sporadically. While the pain may merely inconvenience some people, others may be completely incapacitated by the pain.

Chronic pain is often described as “burning,” “shooting,” “electrical,” or “aching,” and it can be accompanied by stiffness, soreness, tightness, and discomfort. Over time, it can lead to fatigue, moodiness, or sleeplessness. The source of a sufferer’s chronic pain can be difficult to pinpoint, since a variety of diseases may contribute. It may linger from an old injury, accompany the natural aging process, or even come from poor posture.

But chronic pain can do much more than just interfere with normal, day-to-day life. Researchers at Northwestern University found that it can shrink the brain by 11%, effectively speeding up the brain’s aging process by 10 or 20 years. The effects of chronic pain can also create a vicious cycle. With time, the affected nerves become more sensitive, to the point where even the touch of a feather can be painful.

Pain Medications Are Only Part of the Solutions

For many sufferers of chronic pain, medications can help the pain. For other patients, pain medications may not be the best alternative. For example, for many patients, painkillers may interfere with other medications. Despite their proven results, pain medications should not be the only solution considered when attempting to assuage chronic pain. Medication is only one of several alternatives to treating chronic pain.

Pain Relief Alternatives

Moving around more is the last thing that many chronic pain sufferers would think to do. Despite sounding counter-intuitive, consistent exercise is one of the most effective ways to prevent chronic pain, regardless of age. A Norwegian study from 2011 looked at 46,533 adults and found that the incidence of chronic pain among young and middle-aged individuals who exercised was 10-12% lower. Exercisers who were 65 years of age or older showed even better results.

The Chinese method of acupuncture may also help. A study from Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Institute in New York, as well as other studies from 2009 and 2010, found that real acupuncture is more effective at relieving pain than no acupuncture or “sham” acupuncture. This finding seems to rule out the placebo effect that many cite when discussing acupuncture. Some researchers think acupuncture provides relief by reorganizing nerve pathways and releasing adenosine, which is one of the body’s natural painkillers.

Reiki and Chronic Pain…Could it Help?

In addition to other natural, non-invasive therapies, Reiki is becoming an increasingly popular option. Since Reiki is being offered in more private practices, hospices, and hospitals, more patients can benefit from the treatment than ever before.

According to AltMD, beyond signaling a physical problem, chronic pain can also stem from psychological and emotional disturbances. Reiki can resolve them by allowing healing energy to flow freely. The result is reduced pain and tension, as well as feelings of relaxation and rejuvenation. Unlike most other treatments, Reiki is a multi-purposed method that can heal both physical and emotional ailments. Through Reiki, some patients suffering from pain due to cancer, injury, or psychological or emotional distress have found relief where other methods were not successful.

Growing Evidence in Reiki Research

Some small studies have been conducted to determine the effectiveness of Reiki. They suggest that patients may use Reiki to find relief from not only the physical aspects of chronic pain, but also the anxiety that often comes with it. According to an article from the University of Minnesota, several studies found that Reiki treatments seem to relax patients, reduce fatigue and depression, and strengthen a person’s overall sense of wellbeing.

According to an article by Anthony Schifano on the National Fibromyalgia and Chronic Pain Association’s website, Reiki sessions have brought relief and helped individuals feel more balanced. He writes that patients who received Reiki treatment experienced “total relaxation, less tense muscles, and improvement in their range of motion.” One patient who suffered with fibromyalgia pain for years was able to stop taking pain-relieving medications after starting regular Reiki treatments.

Increasing Awareness in the Medical Community

Medical practitioners and patients, as well as researchers, are becoming more aware of the real and lasting proven effects of Reiki when it comes to treating chronic pain. Reiki succeeds because it works on a deeper level, influencing the flow of healing energy that promotes a sense of balance and leads to pain relief in patients suffering from chronic pain from a variety of conditions. Ongoing research and testimonials from patients have shown that an integrative, individualized approach works best. Chronic pain and its accompanying treatments are still being researched; Reiki is crucial for this research. When discussing chronic pain, combining medication with exercise, acupuncture, and Reiki may potentially bring about the highest level of pain relief.

Gratitude Can Have Deep Positive Affects On Health

January 9, 2015 by Linda Crane Leave a Comment

Since we are what we eat and what we think…here are some ways to enrich your life and health in this New Year.  It’s all about your energy and how you use it, because everything is made up of vibrations of energy.  Although energy is  unseen (meaning its not a thing you can go to the store and buy, nor is the energy of Love for that matter); yet it is certainly palpable and you can feel its affects. It’s about time and wise for each of us to get in touch with what energies we are taking in…and giving out…especially now in the 21 Century.

Five Contemplations Before Eating:

  1. 1)  This food is a gift of the earth, the sky, numerous living beings, and much hard and loving work.
  2. 2)  May we eat with mindfulness and gratitude so as to be worthy to receive this food.
  3. 3)  May we recognize and transform unskillful states of mind, especially our greed and learn to eat with moderation.
  4. 4)  May we keep our compassion alive by
eating in such a way that reduces the suffering of living beings, stops contributing to climate change, and heals and preserves our precious planet.
  5. 5)  We accept this food so that we may nurture our brotherhood and sisterhood, build our community, and nourish our ideal of serving all living beings.– Recited before meals in Thich Nhat Hanh’s Order of Interbeing, a Buddhist community that spans the globe

Eat in Gratitude and Thanksgiving:

Since researchers have concluded that expressing gratitude can have deep and positive effects on your health, we suggest that you may want to find ways to bring thankfulness into your preparation and eating of food. When you sit down to eat, whether by yourself or with others, you can take a moment to reflect on the gifts of food in front of you, the effort that went into bringing it to your table, and the blessings that abound with eating healthy meals.

The saying of grace is, at least in its original intent:
A way of connecting to our sense of gratitude and kinship with life. It is a means of caring for ourselves. It is a way to slow down, to relax, to let go of the busy-ness and worries of the day, and to be open to the food we’re about to receive.

It enables us to acknowledge and bond with the others with whom we are sharing the meal. It is a way to join with them, and all the people and elements that have made our meal possible, in a spirit of appreciation. It is not so much the words we say, as the state of mind and heart we evoke, that is important. It is a way to honor the deep human need to express our common unity in the mystery of life.   John Robbins

Easy Tips For Physical And Mental De-Stress

October 6, 2014 by Linda Crane 2 Comments

Stop “trying” to eat healthfully START doing it 100%.  Why? because “trying” to do something can be stressful.  Feeling good and healthy is a large part of  “Living The Good Life”.  We learn about this when we aren’t feeling well.  Not eating well causes us to struggle mentally and physically. Eventually we will have to get more creative to regain what we may lose from less healthy habits. This can cause that emotional roller-coaster which produces fatigue and feeling drained from those highs and low’s. By choosing more healthy foods to keep your life on a better even track,  you can meet challenges in your daily life more “easily and stress free” to accomplish your goals.  Less stress and more peaceful living is of great value for experiencing more happiness each day.

“Easy Tips” for Physical and Mental De-Stress Each Day.

On the physical health side: It’s known that we are products of our environment, our thoughts and our habits.  “Think a thought, sow an act…Sow an act, reap the habit,…Sow the habit, reap the character,… Sow the character, reap the destiny.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

I like Dr. Joel Fuhrman M.D. and agree with what he says about eating nutritiously for health:

“This will take strength and effort, but the pleasure and rewards will be priceless”!

1.  “Go Cruciferous“!   Cruciferous vegetables are your best defense for fighting cancer!                     Examples: broccoli, cauliflower, kale, brussel sprouts, cabbage, bok choy, arugula, collard greens, daikon, mustard greens, kohlrabi, radishes, rutabaga, turnips, watercress.

2.  Salad is the main dish – and the secret to successful weight control and a long healthy life.

3.  Low-nutrient foods fuel overeating behavior – “Flood Your Cells With Nutrients”!

4.  Eat For Health…put an end to type II diabetes or heart disease – and get off medications!             Dr. Joel Fuhrman M.D.

For Mental De-Stressing:

Take a “5 Minute Fix of silence and quiet” to enhance your mental focus and happiness. Give your brain a chance to be off duty…by inviting more quiet into your busy life. This will assist you in being more productive while making healthier decisions.

If you lose those moments to de-stress then you also lose the chance to process and integrate things you have learned… heard… and done.  Helpful ideas show up when you turn off the noise.  Many people get good insights when taking a bath or while taking a shower without any distractions.

You’ll discover as I did that without distractions; you will have more space to think, relax, brainstorm, and enhance your ability to move toward achieving those things that make you feel happy.

The Following Points Are Helpful For Me:

1. Turn down the volume and stop living with chronic noise.

These are some small changes that give my brain the opportunity to focus and reflect, so I can make healthier decisions. When we turn down the volume we can tune into another person and experience a connection in a relationship that we can’t get from a life awash with noise, chatter, and distractions.

2. Take regular breaks from social media just 5 minutes at a time helps to allow more quiet time into my life. This helps me to be calmer and more energetic.

Constant noise around us adds to the rise of blood pressure and it affects how well we remember things too.  Studies on quiet and the brain show that in a noisy environment (ex: a crowded restaurant) affect short term memory in that it becomes overloaded, because the brain circuitry that processes recall and speech is the same one that handles noise.  Ever notice that when you are driving and you become lost you’re likely to turn down the volume on the radio?  That’s because when it’s noisy in your environment it’s tougher to concentrate and find your way.  It works the same way for trying to find your way in life…when there are too many distractions it’s harder to focus, plan properly, and delays occur for coming up with the right solutions.

If you are usually distracted by TV, background noise, or a vibrating cell phone, you miss out on your brain being off duty.  Usually when my brain is quiet I come up with those great hunches. When your brain is constantly going it is much harder to process what you have learned,  you are less attentive to what you have heard, what you have done, and your recall is not as sharp.

3. When less distracted and less stressed you’re more likely to keep up positive habits.  Here are a few ways to invest in calmness:

When you are first driving out in your car wait 5 minutes before turning on the radio.

Instead of flipping on the TV right away you can choose what to read by getting your news on line.  It’s better than being forced to process all the days distressing range of stories to watch and fear.

The following has never failed me for decades.  This is my knowing that has become my personal program so I don’t have to tune into the media hype all the time.  You may want to try my approach.  Be positive and consistent with this for it to work for you as well.

I just know and believe,  that I will find out everything I need to know… at just the right time I need to know it…and will be able to do whatever I have to do… with plenty of time to do it.

4.  Set Boundaries for yourself.  Example: Refrain from checking your phone during meals.  You’ll digest your food much better.  Without constant threats of interruptions your more inclined to do something productive for your brain like daydream to invent design your present and future.

5. Meditate which is about quieting the mind and helps you to get inspired.  In order to have new fresh ideas come to you…give your mind calm quiet moments.  Take deep…relaxing…slow…belly breathes in through your nose…and out through your mouth…to experience calmness, and feel more centered. This will enhance your health and focus.

And when you are eating foods packed with nutrients, and include the mental habits to achieve happiness and calm; you’ll become more inspired and productive. Your brain will love it too.

Life’s small moments can only add up to something more meaningful when you give yourself the chance to reflect on them!

What is Consciousness?

February 19, 2014 by Linda Crane 1 Comment

What is Consciousness?  Consciousness is another name for Awareness. Consciousness is the creative principle of The Self.  Consciousness is an aspect of The Self. Consciousness is the creative principle of the True Self. It is the next step before the True Self.

It’s the creative principle that creates everything!!!

Consciousness, Awareness, The Self, God, The Creator, The Divine, Universal Mind: are all terms for the same thing. And yet they are different aspects for the same thing. Consciousness is Universal Mind. Consciousness permeates everything.

Much of our lives are ruled by unconscious habits, that we would term good and bad!

But by becoming Consciously Aware of the cues that trigger our habits and the consequences they provide, we can change bad practices into good ones.

Money Transformation

January 16, 2014 by Linda Crane 1 Comment

How do You ‘open to prosperity’ and make a statement for Yourself in 2014?…….This happens through your own Transformation. Prosperity and transformation go together. They are in balance together and a match to achieving your goals. It’s the Money Transformation that brings about your results.

In the movie Eat Pray Love starring Julia Roberts, there is a joke worth mentioning here.

“There is an old Italian joke about a poor man                                                                                                    who goes to church every day and prays before                                                                                                       the statue of a great saint, begging,

‘Dear saint, please, please, please let me win the lottery.’

“Finally, the exasperated statue comes to life and
looks down at the begging man and says, ‘My son,
please, please, please buy a ticket.’

Now I’m not telling you this story because I’m Italian, which I am, and love Italy, which I do; I tell it because I’m wondering…Do You know that you are the ticket for your life???  In other words, have you stepped out in faith towards the things you cherish most? Have you taken an adventurous move? Aristotle once said, “Nature abhors a vacuum.”  Stepping out, facing your fears, taking action,
doing something – all of these, in effect, create a vacuum. They place a demand on the universe to produce for you a desired result.

If you want to receive an answer from God then you have to be the first cause…you have to decide what you want. It’s like asking a question of God. If there’s no question, there’s no answer. Most of the time,
people have this backwards. So they wait. You have to start the conversation going with your eself and with the Divine.  And you know what people are usually waiting for? Money.  It’s why they’re waiting and feel stuck, because they are waiting for God to talk to them without starting the conversation first. But it doesn’t work that way.

You have to BE your own ticket…first. You have to be the movement, the ticket so to speak, that makes you take action…first.

You give the universe a way to answer you…when you start the ball rollin. The Universe is waiting to respond to your first actions.

It’s a bit backwards, I know. And really, it can take a while to digest this, but you have to start somewhere.

But here’s the approach: Getting MORE money, making MORE money, than you currently have, always involves some sort of Transformation. You have to ‘transform’ your thinking and behaving mindset. You have to become somebody who thinks and believes differently than you do now.

No matter how much money you want it’s all about the same thing: Transformation. When you are transforming yourself you go through an inner process, where by you begin to see, choose, and act differently. This will work as well for acquiring something different then money that you desire to have or achieve.

Speaking from experience, life just gets easier when you invest in yourself. Because you are the ticket.  And if its money you’re after; well it wouldn’t hurt to open more channels to prosperity and possibly  even purchase a lottery ticket; since it’s an opening for money to come in.  You know how the saying goes:  “Hey you never know, you have to be in it to win it.”

However you want to play it: You ARE the ticket in your life:…Take Charge Now!

Think loving thoughts about yourself.  Money likes a breading ground of pleasant, and happy conditions to nestle into.

If you would like to work on your own Self Transformation and start a new year of Success your way… Visit me for a Money Transformation personal appointment at: www.lindacrane.com.

Happiness,

Linda Crane
