Dubai on Empty
Vanity Fair article 4/20/11
Today I came across this article in Vanity Fair that has to do with the idea of money as a curse. “The Gulf is the proof of Carnegie’s warning about wealth: There is no class so pitiably wretched as that which possesses money and nothing else.” In Dubai when you’re living the royal life everything in their life is like a toy. Respecting money… they never had to work for it and mindlessly spend it. The Royal families’ wealth stays at the top, and doesn’t filter down and circulate. Dubai is a desert Disneyland.
“If you ever wondered what money would look like if it were left to its own devices, it’s Dubai.” Dubai is the parable of what money makes when it has no purpose but its own multiplication and grandeur. When the culture that holds it is too frail to contain it. Dubai is a place that doesn’t just know the price of everything and the value of nothing but makes everything worthless. The answer to everything in Dubai is money. In the darkness of the hot night, the motorways roar with Ferraris and Porsches and Lamborghinis; the fat boys are befuddled and stupefied by sports cars they race around on nowhere roads, going nowhere. Taxi drivers of their ambitionless, all-consuming entitlement. Shortchanged by being given everything. Cursed with money.”
“Cursed with money”. Curses are very much alive and operating in our lives today consciously or unconsciously. I say this because: greed, jealousies, and judgments, are just a few situations that bring about curses. And since most of the time the subconscious is running the show via past programming it’s no wonder how we revert back to what we know is comfortable for us especially when life becomes unsettling or we are learning and working with new areas to expand our life. For the need of wanting approval, wanting control, and wanting to be safe, we impose blocks onto others and to ourselves consciously or unconsciously to stay within the limits of our comfort zones. Of course, most of us don’t think of the idea of curses at all, or that this could be at the basis of our problems, but it’s amazing how clearly the idea of curses prevails today. Curses are not acknowledged, talked or written about today the same way as in ancient times. Yet curses pervade through all cultures, races, continents, and financial status.
Yes, many people today think that money is at the root of all evil. Money in and of it self is not evil rather it’s the connotation you place on wealth, abundance and having it all. Money is only a form of exchange. Not only what you believe about money and how you work with it or against it is important, but your attitudes about people with money or without it can seriously affect your life. I personally have loving thoughts towards what money can provide and about having money circulate joyfully in my life. Frankly money is used best as benefiting yourself and those you love. Respect what money affords you to have, as well as, the freedom this means of exchange brings in your life, or be at the risk of using money abusively.
Greed, jealousies, and judgments, just to name a few, are entry points where curses can come into one’s life. “Dubai has been mugged by its own greed. Its consumer economy is being maintained by oil-rich families to whom depressions, booms, lottery wins, and recessions mean little. Riches and wealth are relative terms.”
If you want money to be your good servant give heartfelt gratitude for what you have accomplished so far with it. Watch that you are not spending it carefree, save some and allow it to grow and work for you. If you mindlessly use money, and get desensitized to it, then it can leave as fast as it came in. Don’t love it for it’s own sake, but it’s a means to reaching your goals. Money’s means of action is energy and circulation. When you share it with blessings it will return to you. If you don’t like the way money has been relating in your life, and you believe more abundant living is your goal; then allow yourself the opportunity to handle money differently by changing your attitudes towards it. Feel that you are a money magnet and that you use it wisely. Allow your self financial abundance. Don’t you deserve it? Money is to work for you not against you. Keep it positive.
